1841 - Torryburn High Street - David Balfour

David Balfour was the father of Janet Balfour (who married Samuel Gordon). In 1841 he was living with his brother James (a baker) and his widowed mother Helen (his father John died four years previously). Remember that the ages in the 1841 census were rounded to 5 years. Unfortunately I can't make out what David's profession was - click on the thumbnail to get a bigger image.

1851 - Torryburn Village - David Balfour

David Balfour's married his first wife Mary Patterson in 1844, but she died in 1849, and by 1851 he has married Janet's future mother, also Janet. Strangely Mary's three children are listed as Patterson's, so either Mary's Maiden name was not Patterson (ie she was previously married) or she was out of wedlock, or the children have been given her maiden name. They are listed as David's stepsons, not as his sons though. His next door neighbours are John and Helen Hunter, Janet's parents.

1861 - Guilford Street - James Balfour

James Balfour was the nephew of David Balfour (that it David's brother James' son). His importance is that he moved to London from Fife, and later moved opposite the fish shop of Samuel Gordon so that, when David's daughter Janet Balfour came down to stay with him, she had the opportunity to meet and marry Samuel. Here he is a servant in working as a Junior Baker for a baker called James Dick, who employed 4 junior bakers (I've only transcribed James):
